FARIBAULT, Minn. (AP) - A trip to the restroom resulted in a trip to the hospital for a Bloomington man who accidentally shot himself in the hand over the weekend at a gun show.

Faribault Police Sgt. Richard Larson said the 59-year-old man shot himself while removing his gun from a hook in a bathroom stall while attending the 31st annual Faribault Rifle and Pistol Club gun show on Sunday morning.

The man was taken to a local hospital, where he was treated and released by Sunday afternoon.

The gun show was at the National Guard Armory on Saturday and Sunday.

Man alive, if your gonna run with one in the chamber you gotta be vigilant about when to have that safety on.
OUCH x2, once for the poor guys hand, and once for the black eye he gave the rest of us.

The first order of business. Never rely on the safety. It is a mechanical device prone to failure. In addition, the first rule of gun safty is to keep the weapon pointed in a safe direction at all times. The second, always treat the weapon as if it were loaded even after you have observed the chamber and confirmed that it is, indeed, unloaded.

I can't see any reason for a civilian to keep one in the pipe for normal carry. It's a different story for law enforcement who know that on any day they might have to draw and fire. For a civilian, especially one like this guy, it should stay unchambered.

Somebody who is dumb enough to shoot himself shouldn't have a bullet in the chamber. But a civilian needs to be ready to defend himself sometimes. The most efficient way to do that is to have the round already in the chamber.

guys like that are the reason the rest of us are subjected to a million and one "common sense" gun laws. it's the same philosophy that says that all kids have to wear those stupid looking helmets and elbow pads when they ride their bikes. one dipshit ruined it for everyone.

i understand running hot like that, but like starcannon says, you have to be extra careful about your safety and how you handle your weapon. how hard is it to flick a safety lever into position, or open the slide or cylinder? he hung a loaded weapon on a coat-hook in a shitter stall, for christ's sake.

what the hell's he doing walking around with a loaded pistol at a gun show? i don't know about the rest of you, but here in michigan that's a no-no; all weapons at the show and those entering the premises have to be inspected and held open with a nylon zip-tie or similar arrangement to make sure a round can't even be accidentally chambered.

while this dope got what was coming to him for his carelessness, it's just another nail in the coffin of the rights the rest of us exercise.
